Narrative
O milho branco era utilizado para o pão e o milho amarelo para os animais vacas (gado galego) em farinha ou mesmo em grão e para as galinhas. Actualmente como os tios morreram já não faz pão. Tiraram-se fotografias durante a colheita (fotos nº 3084 - 3090). Em 1995, no dia 19/07/1995 Rena Farias e Amadeu Casal estiveram com o senhor Manuel Rodrigues sa Silva que lhes arranjou milho amarelo (nº colheita 132/95 A - Nº de acesso - 06381). Em 2006, quando voltamos a Covide, o senhor Manuel já tinha morrido (há cerca de 6 anos), bem como a sua esposa. Agora quem está com a propriedade é um sobrinho (herdou) no entanto o senhor tem problemas com o alcool e quase não liga nenhuma à propriedade (a propriedade está muito abandonada, a própria casa tem um aspecto de abandono, até parecia que não vivia lá ninguém. Quando lá estivemos estava a tirar um curso de geriatria (curso financiado) e arranjou-nos este milho que já era a mesma população que já era utilizada pelos tios. Ele agora aluga os campos. Praticamente já não se semeia nada aqui na aldeia. Praticamente já ninguém faz milho e mesmo os animais (vacas), já não dão rendimento.

Banco Nacional de Germoplasma Vegetal Policy

The “Banco Português de Germoplasma Vegetal” (BPGV) conserves living seed and plant samples of mainly Portuguese crops and their wild relatives.

BPGV ensures that the genetic resources that support our food supply are both secure in the medium and long term for future generations and available for use by farmers, plant breeders, and researchers.

These collections are important to ensure that crop plants, which may contain genes to resist disease, provide enhanced nutrition, or survive in changing or harsh environments do not become endangered or extinct over time.

The BPGV located in Braga, Portugal maintains clonal and seed collections of the most important crops, such as cereals, grain legumes, vegetables, medicinal and aromatic plants, forage, pasture and fruit species.

The BPGV is maintained as a global public good under the FAO International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGRFA).

BPGV is the custodian of one of the largest germplasm collections, with more than 10,000 accessions maintained as seeds and living plants, and recently started a cryopreservation programme.
